WHAT IS CULTURAL STUDIES?

Abstract

At about the same time as the Russian “cultural studies” (early 1990s), in the West, mainly in English-speaking countries, a new independent trend in the humanities was formed, which received the name of cultural studies. This title is difficult to adequately translate into Russian (literally “cultural studies”, but this is not a completely accurate translation), so before the appearance of an adequate and generally accepted translation we will leave it in its original, English name. It would be possible to translate it as “cultural studies”, if not for the rather significant differences in content, conceptual apparatus, theoretical approaches, initial assumptions and methods of these two disciplines
